Hollóháza Porcelain x Szmrecsányi Bolda

Hollóháza Porcelain x Szmrecsányi Bolda kép

The collaboration between Hollóháza Porcelain and Bolda Szmrecsányi is an exemplary meeting of more than two centuries of handcrafted tradition and contemporary autonomous art. Within the framework of the project, three classically shaped porcelain vases made in Hollóháza received new, hand-painted artistic interpretations through Bolda’s unique visual language.

The nearly 250-year tradition of Hollóháza Porcelain is built on precision, technical discipline, and enduring quality. These vases represent the essence of the manufactory’s professional knowledge: perfect proportions, gently curved forms, and a high-quality, sensitive porcelain surface.

Bolda Szmrecsányi’s painterly intervention arrived upon this iconic foundation.

Bolda’s artistic practice is characterized by organic movement, a color palette nourished by nature, and layered emotional structures. The presented vases - including Blue Night and Green Spring - carry an atmospheric, almost painterly landscape experience. The brushstrokes do not function as decorative patterns but as dynamic, living surfaces that emphasize the spatiality of the porcelain. The tones of yellow, deep blue, green, and orange evoke the cyclicality of nature and the changing qualities of light.

One of the greatest professional challenges of the project was the material itself. Porcelain is not a surface that can be corrected: every gesture is final. Hand painting in this medium requires exceptional concentration and technical knowledge. Bolda’s work demonstrates that contemporary painting can enter into dialogue with traditional applied-arts technology without losing its autonomy.

This collaboration goes beyond an aesthetic experiment. The project offers a new narrative for Hungarian porcelain: the manufactory is not an archive but a living, responsive, evolving cultural actor. The collaboration forms a bridge between generations, genres, and modes of thinking.

The three vases are not merely objects but statements: tradition and contemporary art are not opposites, but forces that strengthen one another.

This collaboration has created a truly value-producing dialogue between a historic manufactory and a distinctive contemporary artist - placing porcelain in a new context and addressing a new audience for the heritage of craftsmanship.
